Gilgamesh (1993)
trombone solo
Commissioned by Akkadian Theatre

Gilgamesh, King of the ancient Sumerian city of Uruk, is said to have lived around 4000 BCE. He is the protagonist of an epic purported to be the first literary example of reflection in the first person. This Epic of Gilgamesh recounts the life of the King, and has been preserved on clay tablets from the great ancient library of Ashurbanipal that was sacked and burned to the ground around 200 BCE.

This solo is from the Gilgamesh suite for music theatre, commissioned by Akkadian Theatre and first performed by the Libra Ensemble in Melbourne, in 1993.
