Madness in Paradise

Theodore DOLLARHIDE
Born 1948, Santa Rosa (California), USA

Madness in Paradise (1986)
clarinet, mandolin, guitar, percussion, violin, viola, double bass
Commissioned by ELISION Ensemble with the assistance of the Australia Council

Madness was composed at the request of Daryl BUCKLEY for the then, January 1986, newly formed ELISION Ensemble.

The basic concept for the work centres arounf the notion that every wonderful experience or situation in life has some negative aspects.

There is no such thing as the perfect job, the perfect marriage, the perfect body, the perfect life, the perfect career  . . .  Something is always present which forces a compromise. It is an ability to realise positive and negative forces in each situation, to balance their effects, to accept and learn to love these shortcomings, that defines a compassionate, strong, loving human being. After all, even in the most perfect of worlds, paradise, there does exist some madness.
