A public discussion involving conductor, composer,

Jean-Baptiste DEVILLERS
Via Ultima (1995) -
In this new aspect of ELISION Ensemble programming the ensemble will
premiere a new work, followed by a public discussion with the conductor,
composer, and selected musicians of the ensemble and the audience.
The work is then played for a second time, without interval.
The intention is to enable ELISION to develop a platform to premiere and
focus attention upon major international commissions, to build a
relationship and familiarity with the audience for the hearing of `new´
music, and to enable the ensemble to present a historical context and
appropriate background for the commissioned new work.
For future years the selected composer will pursue a research element
defined by taking in one or more of the following criteria: the use of new
technologies in sound, cultural hybridity, temporal aspects of audience
perception, new instrumental techniques, adapation to or alteration and
degradation of existing instrumental technology with a view to producing new
sonic outcomes, a process or way of interaction between the musicians of the
ensemble, or the very adaptation of the performance space itself.
From 2002 the featured work will be a minimum of twenty minutes in length,
or it will be supplemented either by an earlier work by the same composer,
or another international work that throws the new piece into some kind
of historical perspective.
In 2001 the presented work is Via Ultima
by French composer Jean-Baptiste DEVILLERS with Singapore-based conductor
Robert CASTEELS. It is a commission supported by the Hors Villa Medicis.
Additionally, ELISION violist Erkki VELTHEIM will give the
Australian premiere of Pascal DUSAPIN's Inside for solo viola.
ONE × 2 is presented by ELISION Ensemble with the assistance of
Arts Queensland and The University of Queensland.
ELISION, Australia's national new music ensemble,
gratefully acknowledges the assistance of the Commonwealth of Australia

Chancellor, Professor John HAY
