Interrogating the Instrument
20 September to 2 October 1999
University of Queensland
Public concerts to be announced
Presented by Youth Music Australia
An intensive two-week period of
lectures, recitals, workshops and rehearsals.
Radical instrumental techniques and means of sound production,
recent developments in microtonality, timbre, and rhythym will all be
explored as integral aesthetic aspects of contemporary composition and
performance.
With this intention, four composers will be heavily involved with the
ELISION musicians in presenting this course. They are Richard BARRETT,
Denis COHEN,
Liza LIM and David YOUNG. Technique will be viewed as consequent to and
emergent from music and the choreographic relationship between composer and
performer will be investigated. The use of live electronics as a complement
to instrumental technique will also be examined.
