Strange Customs
A concert of new Australian and Japanese music

The concert will be preceeded at 7:30pm by a CD/book launch:
the intertwining -- the chasm,
installation-performance works (1994-96) by Domenico De CLARIO, Liza LIM,
and ELISION Ensemble (published by the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane)
ELISION continues to celebrate and promote cross-cultural exchange with a
major concert in Brisbane on July 9th.
The concert features the world premiere of works
by prominent Japanese composers Akira NISHIMURA, Toshio HOSOKAWA and
Keiko HARADA. Keiko HARADA is one of the most interesting of the younger
generation of Japanese composers to emerge in recent times and she will be
working with the group on the performance of heavy wood,
which has been especially commissioned for this occasion.
The concert also includes the world premiere of a song-cycle for large
ensemble and soprano (Deborah KAYSER) by Chris DENCH entitled
ik(s)land[s]
setting the poetry of Bernie JANSSEN. Two key works in the output of
Brisbane composer Liza LIM, Voodoo Child and
The Heart's Ear (selected to
represent Australia at this year's Paris Rostrum) will also be presented in
preparation for ELISION's recording of these pieces for
an ABC Classics disc.

WORLD PREMIERE
The concert will be preceded by the launch of a new publication from the
Institute of Modern Art: the intertwining -- the chasm. This is the IMA's
first CD/book and it documents a number of collaborative installation
projects undertaken between 1994-96 by Domenico De CLARIO,
Liza LIM and ELISION Ensemble.
