1998 Programme

Strange Customs

A concert of new Australian and Japanese music

8:30pm, Thursday 9 July 1998
Customs House, 399 Queen St, Brisbane

ELISION continues to celebrate and promote cross-cultural exchange with a major concert in Brisbane on July 9th. The concert features the world premiere of works by prominent Japanese composers Akira NISHIMURA, Toshio HOSOKAWA and Keiko HARADA. Keiko HARADA is one of the most interesting of the younger generation of Japanese composers to emerge in recent times and she will be working with the group on the performance of heavy wood, which has been especially commissioned for this occasion.

The concert also includes the world premiere of a song-cycle for large ensemble and soprano (Deborah KAYSER) by Chris DENCH entitled ik(s)land[s] setting the poetry of Bernie JANSSEN. Two key works in the output of Brisbane composer Liza LIM, Voodoo Child and The Heart's Ear (selected to represent Australia at this year's Paris Rostrum) will also be presented in preparation for ELISION's recording of these pieces for an ABC Classics disc.
