Piia KOMSI coloratura soprano
Piia Komsi began her musical carrier as a cellist.
She performed as a solist and chamber musician, and for several years
played in the Finnish National Opera orchestra.
Soprano Piia Komsi graduated from the Sibelius-Academy opera class
in Helsinki. She made her breakthrough as the Maid in
Thomas ADÈS' opera Powder her Face at Helsinki
Musica Nova Festival 1999. She was then invited to debut
at the Finnish National Opera in the world premiere of Tapio TUOMELA`s
Mothers and Daughters, with great success. Many composers have
written works specially for her because of her very flexible and high
voice and ability in new music, but she has also succesfully performed
baroque works with the best Finnish and Estonian musicians, as well
as coloratura opera roles like the Queen of the Night and Rosina.
As a soloist she has worked with top conductors
(Esa-Pekka SALONEN, Peter EÖTVÖS,
Sakari ORAMO), and ensmbles and orchestras
(Los Angeles Philharmonic, BBCSO London, Oslo Philharmonic,
London Sinfonietta, Gothenburg Symphony, NDR Hamburg and
Finnish Radio Orchestra, Ensemble Modern Frankfurt,
Ensemble InterContemporain, Stockholm Filharmoniker, Avanti!, and
several Finnish Orchestras).
Her opera repertoire includes roles from the baroque, Mozart coloratura
(Queen of the Night), Rossini, Richard Strauss, Stravinsky (Nightingale)
and the new music opera repertoire. Recently she performed succesfully
as Medea in Pascal DUSAPIN's Medeamaterial,
in Teatro san Martin, Buenos Aires. She has also performed at the
Tel Aviv Opera, Zagreb/Music Biennale, Chicago/The Museum of
Modern Art, Rome/Teatro Olympico, Naples/Opera San Carlo,
Winterthur Theater, and at the Finnish National Opera with
Independent Opera Companies In Finland.
Piia has recorded works by Unsuk CHIN and Esa-Pekka SALONEN
for Deutsche Grammophon and by Kaija SAARIAHO for Ondine.
For the forthcoming season she has engagements in Helsinki, Paris, Kologne,
Stockholm, Ensemble InterContemporain, London and München
(the new opera Alice's adventures in Wonderland 2006).
