Richard HAYNES clarinet
Richard has been a member of Australia's ELISION Ensemble since January
2005. He recorded music by Chris DENCH (ik(s)land[s]) and
Brian FERNEYHOUGH (Terrain, Les Froissements des Ailes de Gabriel), and
performed works by Chris DENCH (the sadness of detail) and
Johannes Maria STAUD (Black Moon) as part of the
ELISION Soloists concert in Oslo, Norway. His activities in Australia with
ELISION Ensemble include performances of Terrain at the Sydney Festival
and live broadcasts of Terrain and Les Froissements des
Ailes de Gabriel and Matthew SHLOMOWITZ's Fate (and the Butterfly Effect).
Richard will participate with ELISION in the Trans-Tasman Composer Exchange
with New Zealand-based composer, James GARDNER from October to November 2005.
Richard has collaborated with ensembles musikFabrik NRW (Germany),
Cikada Ensemble (Norway), Topology (Australia) and gateseven (New
Zealand) in events as diverse as the 2005 Nordic Music Council Prize
and the Steve Reich Mini-Marathon. In November 2005 he will debut as
soloist with Aark Ensemble (Australia) performing music by Robert DAHM
(I watched you as you disappeared) and Sadie HARRISON
(The Light Garden). Richard is a Visiting Young Artist at
the Australian National Academy of Music in 2004 and 2005 and an artist
in Musica Viva's Menage 2005 series in Melbourne.
He has performed in the 2002 and 2003
Queensland Biennial Festival of Music, the 2005 Sydney Festival, the
2005 Melbourne Festival (in association with
Chamber Music Australia) and will perform in the 2006
Queensland Biennial Festival of Music. He was a member of the Australian Youth
Orchestra (2003-04) and Camerata Australia (2004) and is a casual
musician with Queensland Orchestra.
Richard is the winner of several awards: QSO Young Instrumentalist of
the Year (2000), Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year (2003),
APRA/AMC Best Performance of Australian Composition (2004), Gisborne
International Music Competition Best Performance of New Zealand
Composition (2003). He has performed as a soloist with the Melbourne
and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, The Queensland Orchestra and the
Queensland Youth Symphony with conductors Michael CHRISTIE,
John CURRO, Sebastian LANG-LESSING, Peter LUFF,
Paul MANN and Markus STENZ.
Richard has been the recipient of grants from the Ian Potter Cultural
Trust, Brisbane City Council Creative Sparks, Arts Queensland and Ars
Musica Australis. From June-July 2005, Richard studied at the Goethe
Institutes in Berlin, Frankfurt and Paris. In 2004, Richard recorded
works by Alban BERG, Liza LIM, Ivana LOUDOVA and
Johannes Maria STAUD for CD and music by Andrew FORD, Guus JANSSEN
and Theo LOEVENDIE as a Young Australia Recital program.
In 2003 and 2005, Richard was offered a position as clarinettist at the
Bang on a Can Summer Institute Of Contemporary Music (USA) and from
2004-2005 attended the International Ensemble Modern Academy (Austria)
and the Centre Acanthes program (France). Richard has participated in
masterclasses with Professor Zheng Mao Zhao (China),
Dietmar WIESNER (Germany), Jörg WIDMANN (Germany) and
Peter JENKIN (Australia) and has
received private tuition from Carl ROSMAN (Germany), Renate RUSCHE
(Germany), Harry SPARNAAY, Erik van DEUREN (The Netherlands),
Michael LOWENSTERN (USA) and Ernesto MOLINARI (Switzerland).
From 2000 to 2006, Richard completed a Bachelor of Music -- Advanced
Performance Cross-Studies in clarinet and bass clarinet at the
Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. During this time, he
studied with Brian CATCHLOVE, Paul DEAN, Diana TOLMIE
and Floyd WILLIAMS. From 2001, Richard directed the new music ensemble,
MERCURY creating and supporting events such as Off the Factory Floor, UNDUE
NOISE, NovaSonus, Jammin', In Their Element, and THROB.
