Jennifer CURL viola
Jennifer Curl studied viola at the
Victorian College of the Arts with Janet MASON and Marco van PAGEE,
gaining a B.A. (Music). After a year with the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra,
Jennifer pursued a freelance career from 1985-87, playing
and touring with groups such as the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra
(Spoleto Festival, Italy; Patras Festival, Greece),
Australian Pops Orchestra,
the Elizabethan Trust Orchestra and numerous chamber ensembles. In
1987, she gained the position of Associate Principal viola with the
Orchestra Victoria and remained there until returning to the
W.A.S.O. in 1989.
In 1992, Jennifer decided to concentrate on
contemporary music performance which she had been involved in since
1986 when she was a founding member of the ELISION
contemporary music ensemble. With ELISION, Jennifer has performed for
festivals in
Italy, Germany, Austria, U.K. and Norway, including solo performances in
all of these countries. To date, ELISION has recorded eight compact
discs, released in Australia and overseas to much critical acclaim.
Jennifer returned to Melbourne and the State Orchestra of Victoria as
Associate Principal viola in 1995. She is still an active member of
ELISION (she studied the er-hu (chinese violin) in 1996 for a work by
Liza LIM comissioned for the Melbourne Festival collaboration with
Ensemble Modern) and continues to participate in various chamber music
ensembles. Jennifer is also studying archaeology at Latrobe University.
