Critical Acclaim

Skinless Kiss of Angels sets---through whispers, speech and singing---erotic words by several writers within the sounds provided by 16 instrumentalists . . . The instrumental writing is vociferous, suggestive and forceful: animalistic would not be too strong a word for it . . . I find the piece remarkable for its musical invention, some of it paying homage to Stravinsky's The Wedding.

Smetanin's Bellevue II is a piece of hammering patterns for tenor sax, trombone and percussion, prompted by Andy Warhol's picture of an incident in a famous New York asylum. Smetanin makes no attempt to be appealing or adopt conventional attitudes of sensitivity. His musical personality . . . is one of the most powerful in present-day Australian music.
