Introduction from the Book
This publication documents a 3-year collaboration between Liza Lim,
visual artist Domenico de Clario and the musicians
of the ELISION Ensemble.
The resultant works form a continuous project marked out in diverse sites:
a suburban church tower, demolition and recycling yards in country New South
Wales, the abandoned industrial landscape of the Misdland Railway Workshops
outside Perth and the warehouse space of the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane.
Domenico de Clario is a non-interventionist artist; his work draws attention
to `what already exists´. His mapping of a site is structured by a reading of
the Hindu Chakra system, though the process is one less determined by
subjective interpretation than by maintaining a gaze that is not fixed.
This fluidity of approach finds its counterpoint in Liza Lim's work; her role
was one of facilitating a state of `heightened attention´ in the musicians
as the basis of the improvisations. She developed listening extercises
emphasising the `internal life´ of the harmonics and rhythms of noises
through which musicians could find ways of interacting with environmental
sound.
The structure of this publication is appropriately open-ended including
recorded excepts from the Tibetan Book of the Dead cycle,
photographs, essays and catalogue notes. The catalogue notes comprise
statements from the artists, instructions for the performers, diagrams and
materials from a variety of sources which audience members used as tools
to navigate through the conceptual, sounding and physical spaces of each
work.
