Excerpt from the Cover Notes
There are performers who believe that the seemingly endless search for
ever-increasing complexity in contemporary music has gone too far: that the
demands of today's repertoire exceed the practical (and indeed the possible)
by such a margin as to make any conventional notions of interpretation quite
out of the question. There are also performers who believe that the greatest
intensity of expression is necessarily to be achieved at the limits of one's
potential, in music as in all other fields, and that continually searching for
these limits is an essential and rewarding part of the task of being a
musician---indeed, that it is the least we can do for the art which gives us
out fulfilment and our livelihood.
The performances recorded here, of course, argue for the latter viewpoint.
The common concern of all these works is not simply the wish to extend the
performers to the limits of their abilities---that is, after all, and absurdly
easy task---but to create music in which the concerns of notes, their
traditional modes of behaviour, and the associated interpretive consequences
laid down be performance convention are replaced by an altogether more
fundamental concern: the performer's physical, intellectual, and (yes!)
emotional resources. In other words: performance. This music is, strangely,
occasionally denigrated as intellectual and abstract (as if these qualities
were somehow undesirable); in a very fundamental way, the opposite is the case.
