Adam YEE
Adam Yee (b. 1974) is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne,
Australia, where his principal study was oboe. Whilst at VCA, Adam founded
KleZeyn Theatre, who have produced his
Road to Hell is Paved with Slaughter (1993) and
Bangers (1994).
Adam has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with the Libra Ensemble,
both as an oboist (in works by Michael WHITICKER, Chris DENCH and
David YOUNG) and composer (shiru l'adonai shir Hadash1
(1994), reshit HoHama yi'rat adonai2 (1995)
and sefirot (1995)). reshit . . . was performed by
Libra Ensemble
as part of the eighth Sydney Spring Festival of New Music, and broadcast
on ABC Classic FM. Adam's first piece for ELISION Ensemble, Zephania,
was premiered at ELISION's tenth anniversary concert, and
subsequently at the 1996 Melbourne Festival. His second
ELISION Ensemble commission, the quartet
yashar yeHezu panemo3, is to be premiered in 1999.
In 1995 Adam was awarded the 2MBS-FM Young Composer's Award for his piano
solo Lot, which was premiered by the inaugural winner of the
Ivo Pogorelich International Piano Competition, Michael Kieran Harvey.
Also in 1995, Adam was awarded a $20,000 Nescafe Big Break to assist
in the composition of his next opera Cannibal Pearce. The opera
is an exploration of the life and death of the Van Diemen's Land
convict/cannibal Alexander Pearce (died 1824), and is to be premiered
in 2000.
In March of 1998, Adam received the first City of Glen Eira Solo Piano
Composition Award. Performances in 1998/99 include the premiere of his tenor
recorder solo, lev nishbar v'nidkeh4, by
composer/performer Ian SHANAHAN, a new quintet for Libra Ensemble, titled
amar naval b'libo5
in September 1998, and ELISION Ensemble's performance of
shiru l'adonai shir Hadash for Radio Bremen in May 1998.
In February 1998 Adam was appointed as the foundation composition teacher
at Victoria's leading secondary college, Melbourne High School, where he is
implementing his own two-year syllabus.
