Chaya CZERNOWIN
Chaya Czernowin was born in Israel on December 7th, 1957.
Since the age
of 25, she has resided in Germany, Japan, and the United States.
She studied composition with Abel EHRLICH, Izchak SADAI, Dieter SCHNEBEL,
Eli YARDEN, Joan TOWER, Brian FERNEYHOUGH, and Roger REYNOLDS
(doctoral chair). Her work has been performed and broadcast in
Israel, Europe, Japan, and the United States by ensembles such as the
Arditti quartet, ELISION Ensemble, Ensemble Recherche, Nieuw ensemble,
SurPlus, SONOR, Helsinki Philharmonic, Orchestra Nacional de Mexico.
Among her awards are:
Representation for Israel at UNESCO's Rostrum, Paris, 1981;
the Gaudeamus Composer's Workshop Scholarship, Amsterdam, 1984;
a DAAD Scholarship, Berlin, 1983-85;
a Stipendium Preis and the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis,
Darmstadt Ferienkurse, 1988 and 1992;
the Asahi Shimbun Fellowship for composition and residency in Tokyo, 1993-94;
selection for a Japan Foundation Artist Scholarship, 1993;
a National Endowment for the Arts Composition Commission Grant, 1995;
ISCM 1995 World Music Days selection and performance
of the orchestral piece Amber;
a year's residency at the Akademie Schloß Solitude, Germany, 1996;
a Heinrich Strobel Stiftung Fellowship, Freiburg, 1997, 1998, and 1999;
an IRCAM commission for the Ensemble InterContemporain using IRCAM
technology, Paris, for 2001.
Chaya Czernowin has taught composition at the Yoshiro Irino Institute,
JML, Tokyo, Japan, the Darmstadt Ferienkurse, 1990-1994 and 1998,
and since 1997, she is a professor in the composition faculty of
the University of California, San Diego.
Presently, she is completing an opera, a commission of the Munich
Biennial 2000. Further projects for 2000-02 include works for the
ORF Austrian Radio Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, and the
Donaueschingen Festival.
