Robert Dahm

Robert Dahm (b. 1981) is fast emerging as one of the most interesting compositional voices of Australia’s younger generation. His music has been hailed in The Age newspaper as representing “…an unmistakably original voice”. Robert’s work has been heard on four continents under the auspices of the Melbourne International Arts Festival, the ANAM Contemporary Music series, Nexus (Brisbane), Kunsthalle Würth (Schwäbisch Hall, Germany) and Danse-Bordeaux (France). His work has featured in the programmes of ensembles such as the Freshwater Trio, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Confluences Trio, Aark Ensemble, and the Song Company, and soloists such as Richard Haynes, Jessica Aszodi, Jenny Duck-Chong, Anne Norman and Barry Cockcroft.

In 2008, Robert was one of the winners of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Cybec 21st Century Composers’ Program, under the mentorship of Chris Dench. In the same year, he was awarded his Masters Degree with first class honours from the University of Melbourne, studying with Brett Dean. In 2006 Robert was invited to guest-edit an issue of the musicological journal Context centred around precompositional processes, to which he also contributed a substantial composer interview with Jay Alan Yim. As a conuctor, Robert has premièred, recorded and/or workshopped dozens of new Australian works, from his own works to those of composers such as Barry Conyngham, Martin Greet, Shaun Jones, Benjamin De Murashkin, Steven Hodgson and Tim Shawcross. Robert is currently engaged in a collaboration with Richard Haynes and Eugene Ughetti to produce a work for clarinet and percussion, and with virtuoso gambist Laura Vaughan to produce a solo viola da gamba.
