Michael Hewes — sound design

Michael is sometimes a sound engineer, sometimes a performer, sometimes a composer, and sometimes all at once. Over the last twenty years he has worked all around Australia and the world delivering contemporary music and spatial sound to Japanese theatres, Tasmanian blacksmith shops, Swiss lakes, Brisbane power stations, Perth foundries, Warsaw studios, Adelaide river banks and Berlin concert halls. In the years with ELISION, Michael has worked closely with composers such as Richard Barrett, Liza Lim, Chris Dench, John Rodgers and Timothy O'Dwyer on the development and realization of large-scale works involving a heavy use of electronics and amplification of acoustic sources. Projects include Richard Barrett’s DARK MATTER in Brisbane, Berlin and Oslo and John Rodgers' INFERNO for the Adelaide festival and Brisbane Powerhouse. More recently, Michael has been lecturing in Spatial Sound Composition at the Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory at RMIT University in Melbourne.
