The Librettist
Patricia Sykes | librettist
Patricia Sykes is a poet and librettist. Her work has been described as “leaping over boundaries”. Her first collection of poetry, Wire Dancing, arose out of her experiences as a performer with the Women’s Circus and was shortlisted for the Anne Elder and Mary Gilmore awards for 2000. Her second collection, Modewarre - Home Ground, was shortlisted for The Judith Wright Award 2005. Patricia has received new work grants from The Australia Council and Arts Victoria and has read and performed her work widely, including on Australian, French and New Zealand radio. Her first collaboration with Australian composer Liza Lim, Mother Tongue, premiered at the Festival d’Automne in Paris, November 2005. In 2006 she was the Asialink writer in residence at Rimbun Dahan, Malaysia, where she began work on a libretto for an opera, her second collaboration with Liza Lim. The opera will premiere at the Brisbane Festival of Arts in July 2008 and will also have a season at the Melbourne International Festival of Arts 2008. Patricia lives and writes in the Dandenong Ranges, Victoria. She is currently working on her third collection of poetry.
